Telework: Full-time telework is not an option due to classified mission; but situational telework may be authorized.


Description of Position: Serves as the USSPACECOM Mission Assurance Risk Management Subject Mater Expert for Space Systems.


Position Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for analyzing Space mission systems and associated critical infrastructure to understand and document criticality, threats, vulnerabilities, and risk to the missions.
  • Leads large-scale special projects or tasks assigned by the director, Mission Assurance and Protection Division or requested by the Director of Operations.
  • Coordinates Mission Assurance, Defense Critical Infrastructure, and Risk Management activities with other Combatant Commands, Services, other Government Agencies, Allies, and Commercial entities.
  • Integrates Mission Assurance, Defense Critical Infrastructure, and Risk Management activities within and across USSPACECOM directorates, divisions, and offices.
  • Supports the development of USSPACECOM Campaign Plans, OPLANs, CONPLANs, named operations, and supporting plan annexes.
  • Participates in important, multi-office/organizational workshops, conferences, working groups, Operational Planning Teams (OPTs) to represent and advocate for USSPACECOM J34 equities. May be required to prepare briefings and/or papers prior to participation in these events and/or present briefings at these events.
  • Provides Mission Assurance, Risk Management, and protection expertise and technical direction to the DoD components in resolving unusually difficult or precedent setting issues (or anomalies).
  • Drafts technical papers and memos for General Officer level consumption and provide technical briefings to senior leadership.


Key Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledgeable of Space mission systems, such as missile warning, missile defense, space situational and space domain awareness (SSA, SDA), satellite communications (SATCOM), positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT), environmental monitoring, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), satellite command and control, and/or space system operations.
  • Knowledgeable of risk management and protection policy, concepts, principles, and practices and ability to apply them towards Space mission systems and Defense Critical Infrastructure (DCI).
  • Ability and confidence to lead projects/tasks involving personnel across multiple different organizations to:
  • Analyze Space mission systems and associated critical infrastructure to identify and document criticality, threats, vulnerabilities, and risk to the missions.
  • Produce a prioritized 1-N list of risk across the Space Enterprise that aligns PPBE and DOTmLPF-P solutions in a whole-of-command effort to buy down risk.
  • Develop and implement a plan for monitoring and reporting asset threats, hazards, vulnerabilities, and risk management activities.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct projects while navigating through complex issues, and evaluating and resolving technical and administrative problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing to Senior Leadership within the command.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and interpret high-level guidelines including general, DoD, Joint Service, and military service directives and instructions requiring considerable adaptation and/or interpretation for application to issues or problems.
  • Preferred, but not required: Knowledge of foreign and domestic space capabilities and systems.
  • Preferred, but not required: Knowledge of Joint operational doctrine, the Joint Planning Process, Joint combatant command structure, and global command and control constructs.
  • Preferred, but not required: Exercises knowledge and skills in determining how USSPACECOM plans/mission requirements relate to and interact with equivalent plans from other Combatant Commands and DOD mission objectives.


Qualification Requirements:

  • Experience at the next lower broadband/grade level (or equivalent) in performing major duties of position listed above.


Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI Security Clearance.
  • Position requires drug testing.
  • Occasional travel away from the regular duty location may be required.
  • May be required to work irregular duty hours including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
