Job Title: Histology Technician

Job Specialty: Histology

Job Duration: 13 weeks

Shift: Variable - 0200-1030, 0500-1330, 1200-2030, 1430-2300 (5x8 Hr)

Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week

Experience: Previous professional experience preferred

License: Registry eligible, certification required within 6 months of hire

Certifications: HT, HTL with ASCP certification

Must-Have: Ability to float to any location within a specified zone and perform duties outside original assignment job requirements in accordance with policies.

Job Description:

- Perform all levels of routine testing within the histology laboratory.
- Demonstrate high-level technical knowledge and apply it to department testing and clinical relevance.
- Function consistently in a self-directed manner and exhibit complex problem-solving skills.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment, following all relevant policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Perform testing with high competency following established protocols.
- Generate materials for accurate diagnoses and prognoses to influence patient care and management.
- Perform duties efficiently and in an organized manner within the required time frame.
- Promote and maintain a positive, team-oriented, and service-conscious environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge and competency in laboratory computer systems.
- Communicate and document critical issues accurately and timely.
- Utilize critical thinking skills and exercise independent judgment to correlate and interpret data.
- Review reports to ensure all samples are collected, processed, and tested in appropriate time frames.
- Assist with resolving unusual test orders by following up with caregivers or referring to leadership when appropriate.
- Participate actively in training and orientation of new associates and students.
- Respond to customer inquiries regarding laboratory results, patient testing status, test requirements, and other information.
- Monitor email account consistently, providing timely responses or actions when appropriate.
- Handle and resolve customer complaints promptly, referring when necessary.
- Assume management responsibilities in absence of on-site leadership.
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot instruments/equipment, and document activities appropriately.
- Complete required QC and maintenance, recognizing variances and documenting corrective actions.
- Acknowledge receipt of specimens in the laboratory information system.
- Receive specimens, assess priority, assure proper identification and type.
- Order and process hospital registered and outreach patients as needed.
- Distribute specimens to appropriate testing areas; prepare specimens for off-site testing.
- Complete paperwork and/or computer documentation related to off-site testing.
- Package specimens for courier transport to off-site testing locations.
- Act as a steward of finances through appropriate use of supplies and materials.
- Recognize and provide input for opportunities to improve productivity, workflow, and cost containment.
- May be assigned lead responsibilities in various areas.
