Job Description

Essential Functions

Specific tasks, responsibilities or competencies may be documented in the incumbent's performance objectives as outlined by the incumbent's immediate supervisor or manager.
1. Routinely sets up respiratory equipment and instructs patients, caregivers, and medical staff on the proper use and cleaning of respiratory equipment to ensure the best patient care possible.
2. On an on-going basis completes progress reports with necessary billing information and submits the information timely to ensure proper allocation of payment.
3. On a daily basis, and adhering to professional standards, provides and evaluates the effectiveness of respiratory care, coordinates respiratory services, and performs respiratory care services in accordance with hospice orders. This includes but is not limited to in-home phone follow ups of respiratory equipment to ensure patient understanding of use and satisfaction of service.
4. Acts as a point of contact for nurses for questions related to respiratory needs or equipment.
5. Responds to emergency calls and new patient orders to deliver equipment as needed during regular business hours and during on-call rotation as defined by respective leadership.
6. Acts as a liaison between patient and healthcare team to resolve order issues, complications and to make recommendations for respiratory patient care.
7. Schedules routine preventative maintenance and testing of respiratory equipment in patient's home to ensure proper operating condition and trouble shoot malfunctions.
8. Completes patient files and other necessary paperwork as per current policy and procedures and as assigned.
9. As needed, provides professional level in-services/trainings to hospice nurses to support the effective and proper use of respiratory equipment.
10. Follows the safety program and adheres to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines to reduce work-related injuries"

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Education, Licensure or Certification:
• Associates Degree in Respiratory Therapy
• Licensed RT
• CRT
• RRT
Work Experience or Related Experience:
• At least one year experience as an RT is required
• Experience with home medical care strongly desired
Specialized Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Strong interpersonal skills and customer service skills are necessary as is the ability to remain customer service oriented during situations in which patients or caregivers may be frustrated or upset
• Knowledge of the operations of respiratory therapy equipment such as BiPAP, CPAP, nebulizers, ventilators, suction and oxygen equipment.
• The knowledge and ability to operate smart devices (e.g., smart phone, tablets), computers and hand held scanning devices are required
• The ability to read, write and follow written and oral instructions is required to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed to clean and maintain equipment.
• The ability to protect and maintain the confidentiality of patient protected health information and follow standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with ACHC and HIPAA is required
• The ability to maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate after hours' respiratory patient needs.

• Daily travel is required

Work Environment, Conditions and Demands

• On a very frequent basis (75%-100% of the day), incumbents are exposed to weather as a daily condition of the role, both in the field and in the warehouse
• On a very frequent basis (75%-100% of the day), incumbents are required to handle and transport compressed oxygen
• Incumbents may be periodically exposed to odors and dust from used equipment.
• Incumbents may periodically experience occupational exposure to bodily fluids, feces and blood (approximately 50%-75% of the time) when handling dirty durable medical equipment
• Incumbents may seldom experience occupational exposure to other potentially infectious materials (approximately 0%-25% of the time) when handling respiratory equipment

Physical Requirements and Demands

• Regular and continuous eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity is required to set up respiratory equipment
• Periodically, (approximately 50%-75% of the day) standing, walking, bending, twisting, grasping, squeezing, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching, reaching above the shoulder is required while transporting, setting up, taking apart and moving medical equipment as described
